When the Cranes Dance
I’m a crane. Up to the blue sky I fly. In the clear water I wash. Among the green trees I dance. Under the old pines and on the rocks I rest. Over the mountains and rivers I sing my songs. Together I and my crane friends fly and wander. This is I, a crane drawn on a china brush pot.
My story is long. Where shall I start? Oh, the old potter. He knows everything about making china. He’s been doing that every day, with his hands and also in his head. There I am, resting in the potter’s head, like a cloud wandering in the big sky.One day, the potter is asked to make a new piece of porcelain. It has to be simple and pretty. So, he gets started.
Sometimes he thinks so hard that I feel like I’m dancing among the rainy clouds. Sometimes he becomes so quiet that I feel like I’m sleeping on a spring night’s mountain.Up and down, round and round, the potter’s hands dance.Days later, I can see the shape of a brush pot in his head. Then, I start to see colors, so many and so soft! White and blue and green and purple and red and yellow and … Up I fly!
I fly out from the potter’s head, into the water and pines with my crane friends, and onto a china brush pot.Years go by. Gone are the potter, the brushes in the pot, and the hands that held the brushes … But the pot isn’t gone. Now it stands in a glass room, waiting for curious eyes.I’m a crane. I dance on the china and call it my home.
