A mild -mannered cat byday, at night Rusty was just the opposite. Often, Bill and I would lie in bedquarreling over whether we should let it out to wander in the dark or put upwith another sleepless night.
So, instead, we lay inthe dark each noisy night and wondered what damage Rusty would do. And alwaysin the morning, if I had forgotten to put the butter in the cupboard, there were marks from a rough, little tongue and once even a paw print.
Something had to give.Bill looked at me straight in the eyes, “Do it. ”My reservations were such, however, that it took me several weeks and the loss of nearly a pound of butterto decide we didn’t have much choice.
That night, I put Rustyon his cat bed and patted him a little guiltily on the head. Then I began fillingthe kitchen sink with about two inches of water. Rusty loved jumping into adamp sink and then tracking water all over the cupboards and across the kitchenfloor. According to the article I saved from a website to my folder, cats usedto jumping into your sink won’t do it again if they jump in and find a coupleof inches of water.
Next, I cleared thecupboards of everything. Then I got out all my metal cookie sheets and a forkto go with each. According to the article ,youshould support a cookie sheet with a fork. When your cat jumps on the counter,he will knock down the insecurely balanced cookie sheets. What happens nextwill stop him from doing it a second time.
Everything in place, Islipped onto our bed quietly, waiting. Suddenly, there came an awfully loudnoise of metal. A chain reaction of crashes next. Finally, Rusty rounded the cornerin the hall heavily and leaped through our doorway onto the foot of our bed, tremblingunder our cover. And that was the night Rusty, the Midnight Troublemaker, retired.

In May 2012,Australia’ s Macquarie Dictionaryand the McCann Advertising Agency gathered a group of language experts to namea phenomenon common in the age of the smartphone. They called the phenomenon “phubbing”,and defined(定义) it as “the act of snubbing(无视) someone in a socialsetting by looking at your phone instead of paying attention.” It’s not theusual way words begin to exist.
A month later, the firstexample of phubbing in a major newspaper appeared in a letter to the editor ofThe Age , published in Melbourne. Since then, the word has appeared in various mediathe world over. Phubbing has yet to be fully adopted in the U.S.,but we have collected some evidenceof it in use.
On 29 September 2015,James A. Roberts wrote in theHuffinington Post, “In the present case, phubbing is a combination of the wordsphone and snubbing. To be phubbed is to be snubbed by someone using their cellphone while in your company. The “phubb” could be an interruption of yourconversation with someone when he or she uses their cell phone or is distractedby it (steal glances when they think you ’re not looking) instead of payingattention to you. Maybe worse, you’ve been phubbed ifsomeone used their cell phone instead of communicating with you while stayingclose to you. Oh, the shame.
The meaning and variousforms of the word have yet to settle out. Is it phubbing if you’ re staring atyour tablet instead of your phone? Is the singular noun (and the base form ofthe verb) spelled phubb, as in the example above, or phub, as in some othersources? These are the sorts of questions we’ll need answers to before we’ reready to consider phubbing and its relations for entry. In the meanwhile, youcan of course use phubbing if you feel the need. It seems we all do these days.
28.What does Paragraph 1 mainly talk about phubbing?
A. Its usage. B. Its birth. C. Its influence. D. Its definition.
29.What may phubbing probably lead to according to James A. Roberts?
A. Obvious embarrassmentin life. B. Heavy reliance oncellphones.
C. Complete ignorance byyour friends. D. Permanent breakupof relationship.
30.What can we learn from the last paragraph about the word phubb?
A. It arouses heatedarguments. B. It proves to besettled.
C. It’s not included ina dictionary. D. It’s not difficultto understand.
31.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Where Phubbing LeadsUs? B. Why Phubbing Ruins Our Life?
C. What Makes PhubbingCommonly Seen? D. How Phone SnubbingBecomes Phubbing?

An individual from anunknown hominid ( 原始人类) species walked acrossa field of wet, volcanic ash in what is now East Africa around 3.66 millionyears ago, leaving behind a handful of footprints.
Those five ancientfootprints, largely ignored sincethey were partly unearthed at Tanzania’s Laetoli site in 1976,show features of upright walking bya hominid, a new study finds. Researchers had previously considered them hardto classify, possibly produced by a young bear that took a few steps whilestanding. But the latest analysis refutes that suggestion.
McNutt, DeSilva, whostarted the new investigation as a Dartmouth College graduate student, andtheir colleagues fully dug out and cleaned the five Laetoli footprints in June2019. Then they measured, photographed and 3 -D scanned the ancient tracks.McNutt’ s group focused on two footprints that were particularly well-preserved. Foot shapes, sizes, and walking characteristics of the Laetoliindividual differed in various ways from those of other hominid individuals atthe same site. The prints also didn’t match those from modern black bears and modernchimps (黑猩猩) walking upright
The Laetoli individualpossessed a wider, more chimplike foot than humans, the researchers say. Its bigtoe stuck out slightly from the second toe (脚趾),but not to the degree observed in chimps. On one step, the Laetoli individual’sleft leg crossed in front of the right leg, leaving a left footprint directlyin front of the previous track. People may cross -step in this way when tryingto regain balance. And bears and chimps assume a relatively wide standing due toknee and other bone arrangements that prevent them from walking like theLaetoli individual and probably from cross -stepping, the scientists say.
Given that only two ofthe ancient footprints are complete enough to analyze thoroughly, the possibilitythat a chimp other than a hominid made the Laetoli footprints can’t be ruledout, says William Harcourt Smith, a scientist at Lehman College. But evidenceof cross -stepping is enough to prove that it was a hominid track maker, hesays.
32.What does the underlined word “refutes” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Objects to. B. Supports. C. Puts forward. D. Criticizes.
33.Why do researchers think the footprints were unlike those of bears or chimps?
A. They are lesschimplike. B. Theyhave toes sticking out.
C. They show relativelywide standing. D. Theypossess features of cross -stepping.
34.What does William think of the new research finding?
A. It’s convincing. B. It’s challenging. C. It’s confusing. D. It’s conflicting.
35.What is the purpose of the text?
A. To describe a majorevent. B. To share a new discovery.
C. To introduce anunknown species. D. Tosettle a huge disagreement.

We three were runningdown the path, shouting and laughing when our dog Rubby suddenly stopped in thedistance. He turned around, eyeing us, with his tail swinging up and down.
My little brother Tobyimmediately sped up and rushed to where Rubby was. He bent down and picked upsomething and ran back to us.
It was a bunch of keys.We gathered in a circle , examining the keys one by one, hoping to find someuseful information about its owner. There were3 keys, a house key, a mail keyand a car key and a unique key fob (吊坠),very likely designed specially.
“Gosh, the owner might be in greattrouble. ”My sister sighed. She was right. We once lost our keys. Although wehad an extra house key, it took our parents quite a long time to get a new mailkey, let alone there was a car key.
Who might have lostthem?
After many wild guesses,we finally drew a conclusion: It might belong to someone in our neighborhood asonly our neighbors wandered into the woods for a walk. But it was still impossibleto figure out who it was. We had a very big neighborhood.
“The owner might come back to lookfor them.” Toby reminded.
So we decided to staywhere we were, keeping a watchful eye on all passers-by. Our little dog ran incircles of excitement that we stayed so long in the wild. We remained in thewoods for two hours, asking everyone we came across whether they lost theirkeys, but in vain.
It seemed we had to giveup. But my sister wouldn’t, saying that she just couldn’t stop picturing theowner brushing aside tall grasses hoping to find the lost keys.“ How anxiousand upset the owner would be!”
I took a look at thebunch of keys again and quite by accident, found the key fob had the alarmbutton, “Look! If we press the alarm button, close enough of course, we can setoff the owner’s car alarm…”
“That’s brilliant.

第二节
We rushed back to ourneighborhood. We wandered from house to house, pressing the button all the way,in the hope of finding the owner as soon as possible. But it didn’t seem a smoothsailing. After an-hour’s search, we still didn’t succeed. Tired and disappointed,we couldn’t help feeling a little bit discouraged. Even our dog Rubby sloweddown its pace. I stretched out the keys to my sister, “Maybe good luck foryou.” She took it and pressed. There went a sharp and loud noise. There itwas. We burst into laughter and hugged each other tightly. Then we approachedthe house and rang the doorbell.
The door opened and infront of us stood an old lady. My sister held up her hand, with the keyshanging from her pointer finger and a giant smile on her face, and asked, “Sorryabout the racket but have you lost a bunch of keys?” The lady looked at usin total surprise, saying she had never thought they could be recovered. Afterwe explained the whole thing to her, she insisted that she should pay us somemoney. We refused, saying, “Happy to help. You would have done the same thing!” Then we waved her goodbye and left for home.
